THE NAME OF MARMARIS In 138 B.C. Attalos the 3rd, King of Bergama, whose predecessors had ruled Caria for 90 years, ceded Physkos to Rome and the city was ruled from Rhodes by Roman generals. The city became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1425, and the castle was built in 1521 AD for use in a planned assault on Rhodes. The Ottoman Sultan at the time, Kanuni Sultan Suleyman, changed the name of the town to Mimaras, which then became Marmaris according to the historian Evlija Celebi. A local rumour has it that the reason for the change of name Mimaras was that Suleyman, on returning from his expedition to Rhodes, disliked the castle and exclaimed "mimar as!", which means "hang the architect!" Unfortunately there is no evidence to support this amusing story.   ABOUT MARMARIS Public conveyance is plentiful and comfortable in Marmaris. Tourists can avail charter flights, which are available from all the major European cities (April to October) and thus reach Dalaman, the local airport. Dalaman is one-hour drive from Marmaris.
Once in Marmaris, you can reach any destination by availing a Dolmus or a taxi. The former is a local minibus that has wide network, frequent service and cheap fare. Taxi (locally Taksi) is another popular means of transport and is always equipped with a meter. A 15% tip is conventional.
If you want to hire a car for touring Marmaris, then all sorts of cars like Toyota, Ford, Fiats, minibuses, mountain bikes, etc are available. A driver and a guide can also be rented by paying extra.
Last but not the least, there are ferries which run between Rhodes and Marmaris. During summer, daily service is available whereas in winter they run twice a week. If you love ancient charm and the magical serenity of nature Marmaris is just the right place for you. All you have to do is drive out of the town a little, and nature with all its vintage charm will embrace you from all sides.
Along the peninsula lie humble villages, tourist marinas and secluded beaches that still hold the enchantment of the ancient civilization. The lovely resort of Icmeler lies in the outskirts of Marmaris and the stretch between Icmeler and Degirmenyani is aesthetically magnificent. If you are on a yachting trail then two popular stops are Gokova and the village of Turunc. The latter is known for handcrafted honey, saga tea and Garden Thyme. Some other beautiful spots are Siliman Beach, Kizkumu beach and the waterfall near the Turgut village.
A major historical site is the Marmaris castle museum that remains open from 8:00 am to noon and 1:00 pm to 5:30 pm daily. The olive farm also known as the Mountain of Roses farm offers a nice tour of the mill and if you wish, you can taste the exotic olive products of the farm. Make sure you go on a Friday so you can taste their olive bread.
